What is a concussion?
A concussion is a brain injury. Concussions are caused by a bump, blow, or jolt to the head. They can range from mild to severe and can disrupt the way the brain normally works. Even a “ding” or a bump on the head can be serious.

What are the signs and symptoms?
You can’t see a concussion. Signs and symptoms of concussion can show up right after the injury or can take days or weeks to appear. If your athlete reports any symptoms of concussion, or if you notice the symptoms yourself, seek medical attention right away.

Emergency room visits are often not necessary if your athlete has a concussion.
Any of the following symptoms or signs are indications to take your athlete to the emergency room for evaluation:

  • Severe headache
  • Vomiting more than once
  • Unable to arouse or decreasing level of consciousness
  • Unequal pupils
  • Symptoms that are worsening over time
CT scans seldom show any abnormality in concussion injuries.  They are used to make sure there is not any other abnormality or injury, but a normal CT scan in an emergency room does not mean your athlete is ok and can return to play.
